With the introduction of five new chapters in this 2nd edition, the book becomes a more effective study book for students, as it covers more of the modules required when studying for early childhood qualifications up to Early Years Professional Status. As a study book it is easy to read with each chapter broken down into sub headings and the chapter objectives outlined at the beginning with a summary at the end. The recommended reading and useful websites at the end of each chapter are a useful aid for students doing further research into each particular area of the book. The case studies and the questions for reflection and discussion can also help the reader to question their own knowledge and practice and address their own understanding of being a practitioner in an early years environment.
The book puts the whole perspective of childcare into context by discussing childcare curriculums at an international level as well as at national level. The editor also finds it important that the reader understands that modern childhood in the western world is different from that in under developed countries.
The final chapter ‘Professional work in Early Childhood’ is very thought provoking as it addresses the question ‘Who needs qualifications.’ The chapter outlines the history of childcare and the route that the government hopes it will take in the future.
This book offers underpinning knowledge to support childcare practitioners in furthering their knowledge and qualifications
