Daycare Trust report claims the cost of childcare is rising well above inflation.

A report recently published by the Daycare Trust and detailed on the BBC website claims that costs nationally rose 5% last year with inflation at 2.1%. It also claims that the cost of childcare in out-of-school clubs has risen by six times more than the rate of inflation to an average of £43 a week. The cheapest childcare offered in the country was in the West Midlands whilst the most expensive was London and the South East. To read the complete article click here

NCT asks UK to follow the lead of USA over baby bottles

The National Childbirth Trust is asking companies selling baby bottles in the UK to follow the USA lead and move to producing baby bottles using non bisphenol A (BPA) plastics.  The chemical BPA is controversial and currently used in many baby bottles sold in the UK. There is evidence to suggest that the chemical can interfere with healthy growth and body functions and mimics the effect of the hormone oestrogen in the body. Babies are particularly vulnerable to hormone mimicking effects as they grow rapidly in the early months and years. To learn more go to the NCT website press release

Numbers of Childcare Providers Drop

An interesting article in Nursery World claims that the number of nurseries, childminders and out-of-school clubs has dropped dramatically since last summer. Ofsted statistics on the number of registered childcare providers and places in England show that there are now at least 8,181 fewer childcare providers than there were at the end of August 2008. Figures for March which are due out next month are likely to show an even bleaker picture. To read the article in full click here
